[...] I’d heard about it several years earlier, and was thinking of signing up for the 2005 Conference, when I received that phone call from Transita, saying that they wanted to publish my novel. I’d reached my goal of publication, and foolishly imagined that I’d learned everything I needed about writing a book and getting it published. How could I have foreseen the sad demise of Transita, and my return to square one in a search for a publisher for my next novel, Paper Lanterns? I won’t go into details now, but you can read about some of the resulting difficulties here. [...]

I think the description of 'arrogantly original' goes quite nicely with your own chosen name of 'Crabbit Old Bat'. I wouldn't have considered using that phrase if you'd called yourself something along the lines of 'Timorous Wee Mousie'.

Thank you for your interest in my own story, and fingers crossed for Wasted finding itself heading the list of Ten Top Teens of 2010. There must be some such list already, but maybe with a posher title.

Thanks, Christine - so kind of you to say how much you liked Wasted. I bizarrely love the idea of being called arrogantly original!!

As you know, I'm also really interested in your own story towards publication and i think there's a lot people can learn from it. When I've got more time, I'm going to unpick it and tease out the most useful bits. I do think that what happens to us is a very complicated tangle of luck and hard work and even the hard work is luck and the luck is hard work. But i do think the harder we work the more likely luck is, and definitely the more deserved it is.
